Why One Dog Year Isn't Seven Human Years

If you've ever multiplied your dog's age by seven, you've used a rule that is simple, memorable — and wrong on every axis that matters. Dogs don't age at a constant rate, and they don't all age at the same rate. Here's where the myth came from, and what to use instead.
A rule born from a bad comparison
The ×7 rule seems to date to the 1950s, when a simple ratio ("humans live ~70, dogs ~10") was printed on… nothing official, actually. It spread because it was easy to remember, not because anyone validated it. Its flaws are visible immediately: a 1-year-old dog can father a litter and is close to full adult size — no 7-year-old human is.
Dogs age fast, then slow
Real canine aging is strongly front-loaded. The first year of rapid maturation counts for roughly 15 human years; the second adds about 9; after that, each dog-year adds a roughly constant number of human years. This "fast, then linear" curve matches what veterinarians observe at checkups far better than any flat multiplier.
Size changes everything
The biggest modern insight: large dogs age faster than small dogs. That is the opposite of the pattern across species (elephants outlive mice), and researchers still debate why — one leading explanation involves large breeds' accelerated early growth and higher IGF-1 signaling. The practical consequence is a per-year aging rate that scales with size:

A 10-year-old Beagle (small/medium) is roughly a 56–64-year-old human. A 10-year-old Saint Bernard, at ~80 human years, is genuinely elderly — which is exactly why giant breeds get senior screening years earlier.
Can science do better?
Yes, and it's fascinating: a 2019 University of California San Diego study used DNA methylation patterns — an epigenetic "aging clock" — across 100+ Labradors to fit a formula (31 + ln(age) × 16) that tracks biological, not just chronological, aging. It matches how dogs actually develop: rapid methylome change early, slowing later.
